Artists of the quality of Mitchell Johnson, whose works find many exhibitions in this country and abroad, in galleries as well as museums, deserve frequent documentation of the progress of their artistic life. If the reader turns to 's author page the number of catalogues published in commemoration of exhibitions is staggering. But what is even more amazing is the variation of presentation of the works of one artist in manners that make the works seem entirely new and coherent.
This catalogue MITCHELL JOHNSON ABSTRACT WORK 2005 -2010 allows the artist and designer and printer (Arizona Lithographers) to present works that create conversations. Though the catalogue states that the works are abstract, and since the realm of painting of Mitchell Johnson is focused more on the exploration of color and how we perceive it, some of the paintings here are selected form his landscapes. Granted, the 'landscapes' selected do dwell more closely with the artist's use of color blocks to define spaces 'Stubaital Garage', 2008-2010 has a bifurcated canvas, part of which establishes pure forms of color that happen to develop or metamorphose into the building on the right, and the painting on the back cover of the catalogue, 'Near Selcuk (Siringe)', 2009 is a gathering of edifices, observe by the artist but also seemingly 'built' from blocks of umber and white, teased into place by roofs and windows and shadows.
For this observer the highlights are the stark lines of 'Palo Alto #15 (Buttonwillow)', 2006, with the soft washed application of pigment in the hazy and near spiritual 'Piaggio', 2008-2020 and the subtle triumph of contrasts between 'Insider', 2008-2010 and 'Outsider', 2008-2009 light, whether studio or sun partners these works. Another aspect of the quality of this catalogue is the truth in reproduction of the images. In the smaller canvases such as 'Palo Alto # 18 and #30', the palette knife application of the paint is boldly obvious as is the underlying matrix of the linen weave on which these are painted.
